A “Canyon” is defined as a deep gorge, or large valley with steep sides, which usually has a river flowing along the bottom. ‘Canyoning’ is simply the act of traveling along the bottom and is therefore also known as ‘gorge walking’. Belilena Cave a historical place where evidence of prehistoric human presence as early as 32,000 years ago was recorded. In which the 12,000-year-old skeletal remains of the pre-historic ‘Balangoda Man’ was discovered by Paul E. P. Deraniyagala. This is the ideal opportunity for an adventure in cave exploring in Sri Lanka.
Trek through the jungle (approximately 8 kilometers from Kitulgala) to reach this cave, to explore the famous Archeological Reserve, the Belilena Caves. In addition, these legendary caves have revealed artifacts (of bone and stone tools) as well as other fossils (such as Sambar Deer and Indian Muntjac) believed to be more than 32,000 years old.
